Abstract

Usage-based car insurance has gained popularity in developed countries and some developing countries, prompting insurance companies in these nations to expand these products. In this regard, the Iranian insurance industry has also started to explore this area, although it is not fully developed. The present study aims to evaluate the level of awareness and knowledge of insurance policyholders about this type of insurance and to provide management strategies for developing usage-based car insurance. A survey method was used to assess public awareness in Iran. Based on Cochran's formula for indeterminate populations, a sample of 396 individuals was selected from the policyholders of Saman Insurance Company. To design the questionnaire, the experiences of five global surveys related to customer willingness toward usage-based insurance were reviewed. The questionnaire was then developed and finalized based on the results of these surveys, focusing on the awareness of usage-based car insurance. Finally, the results were analyzed using various statistical models. The findings show that the greatest lack of awareness pertains to the telematics tools used in usage-based insurance and their installation. This suggests the need for targeted programs to enhance policyholders' knowledge, thereby increasing the purchase of this type of insurance. Furthermore, the most influential factors in purchasing usage-based car insurance include offering discounts upon policy renewal for safe, low-risk driving and the price of the insurance policy
