Abstract

Due to the crucial role of child as the future capital of any society, children’ poverty is of special importance. Therefore, this study investigates children’ poverty with emphasis on employment and leisure time. Using data on “Urban Heart” project for 2011, the children’ poverty rate has been calculated for districts of Tehran, and then the most important factors affecting children’ poverty have been identified by estimating the Logit model. Findings show that the highest rate of children employment belongs to the south of Tehran (1.99%) and the 15th district (3.46%). Deprivation of education and increasing age of head of household, food insecurity, habitation in the south and east parts of Tehran are the most important determinants of children employment. Every child under the 18 years spends monthly 47810 Iranian Rials in south of Tehran and 24570 Iranian Rials in district 17 for cultural and recreational services.
In terms of index of non-text books for children under 6 years old, children in east of Tehran with 26.76%, and in district 15 with 57.11% have the most deprivation rates. Deprivation of education, unemployment of head of household, existence of addicted and disabled persons in the family, food insecurity in household, and habitation in east of Tehran are the most important factors of leisure poverty.
